Pentacles and Pentagrams
The Meaning of the Pentacle
The circle of the pentacle symbolizes the cycle of life—birth, life, death, and rebirth—reminding us of the sacred, never-ending rhythm of existence. Many Wiccans, witches, and other neo-pagans honor the divine as a duality, embracing both God and Goddess.
Within the symbol, the circle itself carries layered meaning. The inner circle is often seen as representing the Goddess, aligned with the moon, while the outer circle is associated with the God, aligned with the sun. At the heart of the pentacle lies the five-pointed star, or pentagram, rich with symbolism. Each point reflects one of the four classical elements—earth, air, fire, and water—while the fifth point at the top represents Spirit, our connection to the Divine. The star also mirrors the human form, much like Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, and reflects our five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing.
Traditionally, Wiccans and neo-pagans wear the pentacle with the top point upward, signifying our reaching toward Spirit and the Divine. Some traditions, however, honor the inverted pentacle—point downward—as a symbol of a Second-Degree Initiate, representing the drawing of divine energy inward, into the heart and soul.
