The circle of the pentacle represents the circle of life--birth, life, death, and rebirth--and serves to remind us of the never-ending cycle of life we hold sacred.  Most witches, Wiccans, and pagans believe in a duality of Deity, meaning we see God as both male and female: God and Goddess. The inner part of the circle represents the Goddess, who is associated with the moon.   The outer part of the circle represents the God, who is associated with the sun.   The five-pointed star, or pentagram in the center represents several things.  First, it represents the four elements of earth, fire, water, and air with the fifth "element" of Spirit, as in one's connection to the divine as the upper point in the pentagram.   It represents the human body…think of DaVinci's drawing, "Vitruvian Man".   It also represents the five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch, and hearing.

It’s probably more accurate to call this Grounding, Centering your energy, and Protection, but that’s a mouthful. Focus is most important in spellwork. This meditation will help you sharpen your focus and direct your energy for more effective spellwork. It is also an excellent way to focus before starting any kind of project. I ground and center every morning to start my day off right. Use it when you need a little pick-me-up at work, and the cool part is that no one will even know you’re doing it. Practice it often until it just comes almost instantly and automatically. The more you practice, the faster and more effective it will be. The protection lasts as long as you believe it does. If you have any doubt, just ground and center again.
